Bull
The bull is the third partner in a cuckolding or hotwifing dynamic: a sexually dominant man who has sex with another man's wife or partner, with the full knowledge and consent of everyone involved. His role is defined not just by the sex act but by what it represents: physical confidence, desirability, and a kind of performed dominance that the couple uses as shared erotic material. He is chosen by the couple, not an interloper.
In hotwifing, the bull's role is more straightforwardly sexual, with less emphasis on the cuckold's humiliation. In cuckolding, he may play into the power dynamic deliberately, his desirability and dominance part of what the cuckold's partner uses to tease or diminish. The degree to which he engages with that dynamic is always negotiated.
HISTORY
The word itself is ancient. Across Sumerian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures the bull was the primary symbol of male fertility and potency, its horns and brute vigour equated with sexual power so consistently that the bull god's symbol was the phallus. What is striking, given the cuckolding dynamic, is that the cuckold was also historically associated with horns: the stag who loses his mate to a stronger rival in the rut. The two archetypes have always been paired.
As sexual slang, "bull" meaning a sexually dominant male, a successful womaniser, a man who takes other men's wives, predates its kink-specific use. Green's Dictionary of Slang records it in this sense across several centuries, sitting alongside similar animal metaphors for masculine sexual aggression. It was never a term of shame for the man it named.
The specific role of the bull within consensual cuckolding and hotwifing appears to have crystallised in online communities in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as the internet gave these dynamics a language and a community for the first time. The earliest documented use of "hotwife" in this context traces to 2001. The bull arrived with it, already fully formed as an archetype: dominant, well-endowed, chosen by the couple rather than an interloper, his role to perform for an audience as much as for himself.
What the modern term adds to the ancient archetype is consent and structure. The bull has always existed in practice. What is new is that he occupies a named position in a negotiated dynamic, with expectations, limits, and a specific erotic function within someone else's relationship.
