Funnel Gag

A funnel gag combines a mouth-opening device, typically a ring or open ball, with a funnel or tube that directs liquid into the mouth. Designs range from simple ring gags with a tube attached to the ring, to purpose-built pieces with an integrated funnel and strap harness. The funnel sits outside the mouth; liquid poured into it flows directly in.

WHY PEOPLE USE IT

Funnel gags are used in fluid feeding and forced drinking scenes, which are a specific niche within humiliation and control play. The appeal is the complete removal of agency over ingestion. They are also used in watersports scenes and in consensual forced feeding dynamics. The combination of gagging (loss of speech) with feeding (loss of control over intake) creates a specific power exchange that some people find intensely meaningful.

HOW POPULAR IS IT

Niche, even within BDSM. Funnel gags are associated with more extreme or specific practices and are not widely used outside those contexts. They have a dedicated following in humiliation play and fluid fetish communities.

HISTORY

Force-feeding devices with funnel mechanisms appear in historical punishment and torture contexts, and in the early twentieth century they were controversially used in force-feeding suffragette hunger strikers in British prisons. The fetish adaptation is a reclaiming of a coercive concept into consensual scenes, following the broader BDSM pattern of transforming instruments of control into objects of pleasure. Purpose-made BDSM funnel gags appear in specialist catalogues from the 1980s.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

The tube or funnel should be non-porous and easy to clean. The ring or mouth-opening component should be comfortable, as scenes involving this type of gag tend to be extended. The funnel should be removable for cleaning. Check that the flow rate is controllable; a very large funnel that empties quickly can create a choking risk.

TRUSTED BRANDS

Lovecrave and a small number of specialist fetish suppliers produce purpose-built funnel gags. Many practitioners use custom or improvised designs.

WHERE TO BUY IT

Specialist BDSM retailers. Extreme Restraints and Stockroom carry some versions. Custom pieces are common.

Funnel gags range from about $20 to about $70 for purpose-made versions. Many practitioners use custom or improvised designs at lower cost.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT

Flush the funnel and tube with hot water and dish soap after every use. Run the soapy water through completely, then flush again with clean hot water. If the tube has developed a residue or odour, soak in a diluted white vinegar solution for 15 minutes and flush clean. Allow to air dry fully before storing with the tube open, not coiled tight, so air can circulate inside.

Inspect the mouthpiece for cracks or rough edges before each use. The tube connection point is a stress point, as the tube can be pulled during use. Check that the connection is secure and not deteriorating. Silicone components can be boiled or sterilised with isopropyl alcohol. Rubber components should be washed with soap and water only. Store in a dry bag where the tube will not be kinked, as repeated kinking weakens the tube wall over time.
