Ring Gag
A ring gag is an open circular ring, typically metal or rigid plastic, that sits between the teeth and holds the jaw apart. The ring is held in position by a strap behind the head. It does not fill the mouth like a ball gag; instead it holds it open, leaving the tongue and throat accessible. Drool is pronounced. The wearer can make sounds but cannot form words clearly. Ring size determines how wide the jaw is held open.
WHY PEOPLE USE IT
The open-mouth effect is the defining feature. A ring gag leaves the mouth accessible for use by a partner, which is central to the oral service dynamics it is most associated with. The combination of an open, drooling mouth and the inability to speak creates a specific presentation of vulnerability and availability that is distinct from other gag types.

HISTORY
Open-mouth gags appear in historical bondage imagery from the earliest illustrated fetish publications, but the ring gag as a distinct commercial product emerged through the BDSM gear market of the 1970s. Leatherworkers producing custom bondage equipment standardised the design, which borrowed from medical mouth-openers and veterinary speculums. The ring gag became a catalogue item through specialist retailers in the 1980s and has changed little since, with the main evolution being a shift from metal rings to silicone-coated versions that are easier on the teeth.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Ring diameter determines how wide the mouth is held open. A ring that is too large causes significant jaw strain; too small and the gag loses much of its effect. Most people find a ring in the 40-55mm range workable for extended wear. Adjustable ring gags that allow the ring to be swapped out are a practical choice if you are unsure of sizing.
The ring material should be smooth and non-porous. Silicone rings are comfortable and easy to clean; stainless steel rings are very durable and can be sterilised. Avoid PVC or cheap plastic with visible seams, which can cause abrasion.
Straps should be adjustable and the buckle should allow fast release. A locking buckle adds to the control dynamic for those who want it. Check that the ring is securely anchored to the strap connectors, as the junction point takes significant stress during use.
Because ring gags hold the mouth open rather than filling it, swallowing naturally is harder and saliva builds up more than with closed-mouth gag types. Pay attention to body position: lying on the back with the mouth open and the head tilted back means saliva drains toward the throat rather than out of the mouth, and the angle of the airway changes in a way that makes it harder to manage. Keep the head level or slightly forward during use.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT
Wipe down after every use with a toy-safe antibacterial cleaner or mild soap and warm water. Saliva collects where the ring meets the strap connectors, so pay attention to those joints. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storing. Metal rings left damp will corrode over time.
Inspect the ring before each use. The surface should be smooth with no chips, cracks, or rough seams. A damaged ring will abrade the corners of the mouth. Silicone-coated rings should be checked for tears or peeling. If the coating is breaking down, replace the gag.
Stainless steel rings can be boiled or wiped with isopropyl alcohol for a deeper clean. Silicone rings tolerate boiling well. Avoid soaking chrome-plated hardware, as prolonged water exposure can lift the plating. Leather straps should not be soaked. Wipe them clean and apply a leather conditioner occasionally to stop them drying out and cracking. Store the gag in a dry bag away from other metal toys to prevent scratching.
