Silicone Plug

A silicone plug is a butt plug made from body-safe silicone. It is non-porous, hypoallergenic, and one of the most widely recommended materials for anal toys. Unlike glass or steel, silicone has some flex and give, which makes it more comfortable for extended wear and easier to insert for beginners. It warms quickly to body temperature. Silicone became the dominant material for sex toys through the 1990s and 2000s as manufacturers moved away from PVC and rubber. For butt plugs specifically, the combination of flexibility, non-porosity, and easy sterilisation made silicone the default material for reputable brands by the 2010s.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Only buy 100% body-safe silicone, sometimes labelled as medical-grade or platinum-cured. Avoid anything described only as "silicone-like" or "silicone blend", as these can be porous and harder to clean. Reputable brands will specify the grade clearly.

Do not use silicone-based lubricant with silicone toys. It can degrade the surface over time. Use water-based lubricant instead.

Check the flared base is wide and stable, especially for extended wear where you want the base sitting securely without needing to think about it.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT

Cleaning
Wash with warm water and unscented soap after every use. Non-motorised silicone plugs can be boiled for 3 to 5 minutes or run through the dishwasher (top rack, no detergent) to sterilise.

Lubricant
Use only water-based lubricant. Silicone-based lubricant can break down the surface over time.

Storage
Store away from other silicone toys, as some silicones can bond together if left in contact for extended periods.
