Thickness and rigidity are the main levers: thinner, more flexible leather delivers a sharper sting concentrated in a narrow line, while thicker or stiffer leather spreads the impact into more of a thud. The category spans two histories rather than one. Repurposing an everyday leather object for punishment is as old as leather goods themselves and needed no specialist market to exist. Razor Strap
A wide leather strap, originally for sharpening razors, used for impact play.

Leather Belt
A leather belt used as an impact implement.

Tawse
A thick leather strap split into tails, traditionally used for discipline.

Slapper
Two hinged layers of leather that clap together on impact, producing a loud sound with comparatively little sting.

Whether it is an everyday object pressed into service or a purpose-built strap, the same two specs matter most: thickness and rigidity. Thinner, more flexible leather leans sharper and stingier; thicker or stiffer leather leans toward more thud. A dedicated handle, rather than a folded or knotted end, gives better control and holds up to repeated use for longer. Starting with something already on hand is a genuine, common way to try the category before buying something purpose-built. Whatever the source, check the edges are finished smoothly rather than raw-cut, since a rough edge is felt on every stroke and only gets worse with use.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT

Wipe down after each use with a barely damp cloth to remove sweat and skin oils, then let it air dry fully before storing. Condition the leather periodically, especially around the handle join where repeated flex concentrates stress and dries the leather out fastest. Avoid direct sunlight, radiators, or plastic storage bags, all of which dry leather out or trap moisture and encourage cracking or mildew. Store flat or hanging rather than tightly coiled or folded, which creases the leather at a fixed point over time.
