Tape Gag
WHY PEOPLE USE IT
The tape gag is often chosen for its immediacy and its visual impact. It is recognisable to almost anyone, which makes it potent as a kidnap fantasy prop or in scenes that draw on crime and thriller tropes. It is also chosen for its simplicity; no harness or hardware is needed. The sensation of the adhesive pulling slightly at the skin and the way the tape distorts the face visually both contribute to its effect. Bondage tape that only adheres to itself is a skin-safe alternative to skin-contact adhesives.HOW POPULAR IS IT
Widely recognisable and frequently used in beginner bondage play and in fantasy scenes. The image is culturally pervasive, appearing in mainstream films and television in ways that other gag types do not. Actual kink use spans from casual couples trying light restraint to dedicated practitioners using purpose-made tape.HISTORY
The tape gag became culturally embedded through Hollywood. From 1930s kidnap serials onward, bound-and-gagged scenes using tape became a staple of film and television as a shorthand for captivity. Gaffa tape, developed for the film industry in the 1940s for cable management, found its way into these scenes partly through production convenience. The image became so widespread that it took on erotic charge independent of the film context, feeding into abduction and captivity fantasy well before the mainstream discussion of BDSM. By the 1990s, purpose-made bondage tape products were available that mimicked the look without the skin-damage risks of industrial tape.
There is a production irony here: most tape gags in film were never actually taped. Real tape over a mouth muffles the actor's lines during close-up takes and is painful to remove between shots. Standard practice was to apply tape for a single wide establishing shot, then have the actor hold it in place with lip pressure for the rest of the scene. The image that generated an entire fetish subculture was, on set, mostly a cheat.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Never use industrial tape (duct tape, packing tape, gaffer tape) directly on skin around the mouth. It is difficult to remove without pain and can cause skin damage. Purpose-made medical tape or self-adhesive bondage tape (which sticks to itself rather than skin) is the safe alternative. Ensure nasal breathing is possible before applying. Have scissors close by for fast removal.TRUSTED BRANDS
Kink Industries and Strict Leather produce self-adhesive bondage tape. Generic medical tape from a pharmacy (hypoallergenic, easy-release) is a reliable choice.WHERE TO BUY IT
Self-adhesive bondage tape is a standard item at specialist kink stores. Medical tape is available from pharmacies.
A roll of bondage tape costs about $8–$15 and provides many uses. Medical tape from a pharmacy is similarly cheap.
Rough prices as of July 2026.
HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT
Tape is single use. Dispose after each use. If tape has been wrapped around the full circumference of the head rather than applied as a simple lip seal, scissors will be needed for removal. Keep a pair accessible before the scene starts.- Wiseman, J. (1996). SM 101: A Realistic Introduction. Greenery Press.
