Birch
A birch is a bundle of thin, flexible twigs or rods, traditionally birch tree switches, bound together at one end into a handle. The bundle strikes as a spread of many thin lines rather than one concentrated point, which is what separates it from a cane or a single switch. Fresh twigs are soaked in water for at least a few hours before use to keep them flexible; dry, unsoaked wood is brittle and snaps unpredictably rather than flexing.
WHY PEOPLE USE IT

Whether foraging your own or buying one, check how recently the switches were cut. Look for a securely bound handle, a bundle that loosens mid-swing is both less effective and less safe. Smooth, unbroken twig ends are safer than ones already splintered.

Purpose-made birches are a specialist item. Etsy has dedicated categories for them, search terms like ‘birch rods spanking’ or ‘punishment birches’ turn up active independent shops, including BirchenBoutique, making and selling them directly. For a lot of practitioners, buying one misses the point: foraging your own switches and binding the bundle by hand is a genuinely popular option, worth choosing deliberately rather than treating as a fallback, if the ritual of making your own implement is part of what appeals to you. For others it is the handmade quality itself that draws them, a bundle bound by hand, imperfect and specific, rather than a uniform manufactured product, whether that is their own work or an independent maker's.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT
Soak in water for at least a few hours before use to keep the twigs flexible; a dry birch is brittle and behaves unpredictably. Inspect before and during use and between sessions, twigs break and fray with repeated use, and a birch that has already delivered a full session is often past its best for a second one. It degrades with use, so treat it as closer to a consumable than a permanent tool, and retire or replace it rather than pushing a frayed one through another scene.
