HISTORY

The Magic Wand was introduced in the United States in April 1968 by Hitachi, marketed as a corded electric body massager for muscle tension and fatigue. Its sexual use spread through word of mouth, and by the mid-1970s sex educator Betty Dodson had made it central to her Bodysex workshops and her 1974 book Liberating Masturbation, in which she recommended it as a masturbation tool for women. That endorsement, passed through feminist and sex-positive networks, turned it into the most recognised vibrator in the world. For decades Hitachi sold the device through mainstream appliance channels, its reputation as a sex toy growing entirely outside official acknowledgment. In 2000 Hitachi ended its arrangement with its American distributor and signed exclusively with sex toy distributor Vibratex, who had been selling it through adult retail. A 2002 episode of Sex and the City brought it to a mainstream audience that already knew what it was for, cementing its cultural status. By 2013 Hitachi had grown uncomfortable enough with the association to cease putting its name on the product. Vibratex negotiated to keep it in production under the name Magic Wand Original, dropping the Hitachi branding entirely. In 2015 a rechargeable cordless version was released, followed by the Magic Wand Plus in 2019, a corded model with updated controls. The product that started as a muscle massager is now sold openly as a vibrator, manufactured in the same factory, under a name that no longer pretends otherwise.

The original Magic Wand is mains-powered and requires a plug socket, which limits portability but removes any concern about charge. The Magic Wand Rechargeable (released 2015) offers cordless use with slightly higher top speed. The Magic Wand Plus (released 2019) is corded like the original but with updated controls. HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT

Cleaning

Lubricant
Do not use silicone-based lubricant directly on the silicone head, as it can degrade the surface over time. Water-based lubricant is safe.
