HISTORY

The wand vibrator as a category traces directly to one product. The Hitachi Magic Wand was introduced in the United States in April 1968 as a corded electric body massager. Its sexual use spread through word of mouth during the 1970s, accelerated by sex educator Betty Dodson, who recommended it in her 1974 book Liberating Masturbation and used it in her Bodysex workshops. That endorsement established the wand as the default recommendation for women learning to reach orgasm, a status it held for decades. For most of that time Hitachi sold the device through mainstream appliance channels, officially as a muscle massager. In 2000 it switched its US distribution to sex toy distributor Vibratex. A 2002 episode of Sex and the City brought it further into mainstream awareness. By 2013 Hitachi had grown uncomfortable enough with the association to remove its name from the product, and Vibratex relaunched it as the Magic Wand Original. It has been sold openly as a vibrator ever since. The Doxy was developed in the same year, 2013, in Cornwall, England, after the Hitachi became difficult to source in the UK. HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT

Cleaning
