Inflatable Gag

An inflatable gag starts as a small, deflated bulb or pear shape that fits comfortably into the mouth. Once inserted, a hand pump attached by a short tube inflates the bulb to fill the space. This creates a firm, custom fit that adjusts to the wearer's mouth size and expands the sense of fullness progressively. Most designs allow deflation and removal by pressing a release valve.

WHY PEOPLE USE IT

The inflatable gag allows graduated control over the degree of fullness and pressure. This suits scenes where one partner controls the level of sensation and wants to increase it incrementally. The gradual expansion creates a distinct physical experience, and the sense of the gag being activated from outside has a strong psychological dimension for both wearer and operator. It also provides a more secure fill than a static gag, as the expanded bulb is harder to push out.

HOW POPULAR IS IT

A niche but dedicated following, particularly in medical play, sensory deprivation, and more intense bondage scenes. Less common than ball or ring gags, but well-established in the specialist BDSM market.

HISTORY

The inflatable gag was adapted from medical inflatable airways and oropharyngeal airways used in anaesthesia, where a cuffed device creates a seal in the throat. BDSM equipment makers began producing consumer versions in the 1970s, borrowing the inflation mechanism for sensation play. Early versions used basic rubber bulbs; contemporary versions use medical-grade silicone with more reliable valves.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

The release valve must be genuinely reliable. A gag that cannot be quickly deflated is a safety risk. The inflatable part should be silicone or latex-free materials rather than thin rubber. Inflation should be gradual, with the pump requiring multiple squeezes to reach full size, which allows for incremental adjustment. Have a backup way to remove the gag in emergencies.

TRUSTED BRANDS

Strict Leather and Kink Industries produce inflatable gags with a reasonable safety record.

WHERE TO BUY IT

Specialist BDSM retailers. Extreme Restraints and Stockroom carry reliable options. Not typically stocked at mainstream adult stores.

Inflatable gags range from about $20 to about $60 depending on material quality and valve reliability.

Rough prices as of July 2026.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT

Deflate fully before cleaning. Wash the mouthpiece with toy-safe antibacterial cleaner or mild soap and warm water after every use. The inflation tube and bulb should be flushed with warm water, then squeezed dry and allowed to air out. Moisture trapped inside the tube will grow mould. If the tube develops an odour that flushing does not clear, the gag should be replaced.

Inflate the gag fully after cleaning to check the valve. A valve that leaks will cause the gag to lose pressure during use. Inspect the mouthpiece surface for cracks or deterioration before each use. Silicone mouthpieces can be boiled if non-porous. Rubber mouthpieces should be washed with soap and water only. Wipe the bulb and pump mechanism clean and store deflated. Keep in a dry bag where the tube will not be kinked or crushed, as repeated kinking weakens the tube wall.
