Paddling
Paddling is impact play using a flat, rigid paddle, typically wood, leather, or acrylic, most often on the buttocks. Unlike a hand or an improvised household object, a paddle is a purpose-built implement, and that changes the character of the practice: it is a dedicated object with its own weight and its own sound, distinct from the everyday objects a hand or hairbrush can be.
WHAT IT SEPARATES FROM
These comparisons group by implement, the specific tool used, not by the general action of striking someone, which any of these could describe.
Spanking: Spanking is the broader practice, most often by hand or a household object like a hairbrush; see the Spanking entry. Paddling is specifically about the paddle: a dedicated implement, its own sensation profile, and its own history as an object.
WHY PEOPLE LIKE IT
What a paddle delivers physically is thud rather than sting: a broad, flat surface spreads force across a wide area and drives it deeper into the tissue, producing a heavy, penetrating sensation rather than the sharp surface bite of a thinner implement. A heavier paddle bruises more; a lighter one stings more, and that ratio, weight to surface area, is most of what distinguishes one paddle from another.
The object itself carries psychological weight beyond the sensation. A paddle kept for this purpose, named, displayed, or simply always the same one, builds a ritual association an improvised object cannot: seeing it, hearing it selected, feels different from a hand reaching for whatever is nearby. For a lot of people, that anticipation, built around a specific dedicated object, is as much the point as the strike itself.
PREVALENCE & GENDER
Population research on BDSM tracks broad categories, not individual implements, so there is no dataset that isolates paddling from other forms of impact play, or from other implements such as the strap, whip, or cane.
I am running my own study to close this gap: which specific implements people actually use, how often, and why. Take the survey if you would like to contribute.
EXAMPLES OF ACTIVITIES
A warm-up with a lighter paddle before moving to something heavier. A full session built entirely around one paddle, working through a set number of strikes across both cheeks. Paddling over the knee or bent over furniture. Choosing a specific paddle for a specific mood, a soft leather one for a sensory scene, a hard wooden one for punishment. Comparing sensation across materials within a single scene. Paddling combined with restraint so the receiver cannot shift away from the impact.

HISTORY
The paddle's history as a punishment object is considerably darker than its modern use. One documented lineage traces it to British naval discipline, where a flat wooden board was used to punish sailors, chosen over a whip because a broad, blunt surface caused pain without the same risk of permanent scarring. A closely related lineage runs through American slavery, where enslaved people were beaten with wooden paddles for the same reason: it inflicted punishment while limiting visible, lasting damage that would affect their value as property. That same design logic, a broad surface that punishes without marking permanently, carried the paddle into American schools, where it became the standard implement for corporal punishment through most of the 20th century. Its use in public schools has declined sharply since the 1970s, though it remains legal in a number of US states today.
A separate thread runs through American fraternity and sorority culture, where paddles became a hazing implement and a symbolic object from the late 19th century onward, intensifying after the Second World War as returning veterans brought military-style discipline rituals onto campuses. That history has been under sustained reform pressure for decades; most Greek organisations today treat the paddle purely as a decorative keepsake representing membership, and anti-hazing campaigns have specifically targeted paddling as a practice to retire.
The paddle's move into consensual kink is a genuinely separate development from all of the above: an object with a punitive, and in the case of slavery a horrific, history, repurposed entirely by consenting adults for a sensation and a psychology that none of its naval, agricultural, educational, or fraternity uses ever intended.
TIPS FOR ENGAGING WITH IT
Warm the area up with a hand or a soft implement before introducing the paddle; skin that hasn't been prepared takes a flat, rigid surface much harder than it expects. Use the whole face of the paddle rather than just the edge or tip; a glancing or angled strike concentrates force in a way the paddle isn't built for and stings more sharply than intended.
Go lighter than you think you need to, especially with a heavier or harder paddle. The thud sensation is deceptive in the moment: real bruising often doesn't show for 24 to 48 hours, so how a strike feels immediately afterward is not a reliable guide to how much impact it actually delivered.
IS IT SAFE
Paddling carries a higher bruising risk than hand spanking, because a rigid, flat surface concentrates and drives force deeper into tissue than skin does. Avoid the tailbone, spine, and hip bones, and stay on the fleshiest part of the buttocks and upper thighs.
Because bruising can take a day or two to fully develop, do not judge total intensity by how a strike looks or feels immediately after landing. Build slowly, check in often, and treat a paddle you haven't used before as an unknown quantity until you have a sense of how hard it hits relative to its weight and material.
