Bamboo Cane
The hollow stem of the bamboo plant gives these canes their character: lighter and faster than rattan at the same diameter, they produce a sharp, whippy impact with a distinctive crack. One of the oldest impact implements on record, bamboo has particular historical weight in East Asian judicial and disciplinary traditions.
WHY PEOPLE USE IT
Bamboo delivers a fast, sharp sensation with a distinctive crack on impact. The hollow structure makes it lighter and faster than a solid cane of equivalent diameter, producing a very stingy stroke with less of the deep heat that rattan generates. It also marks differently from rattan. The historical associations with East Asian punishment traditions give bamboo caning a distinct cultural frame that some practitioners draw on deliberately.
HISTORY
Bamboo is among the oldest materials used for corporal punishment on record. In ancient China, striking with bamboo was one of the Five Punishments codified under the Han Dynasty, applied to the buttocks and legs as a formal judicial sentence. It remained in the Chinese legal code in various forms through to the Qing Dynasty. WHAT TO LOOK FOR
The surface must be smooth and fully sealed. Unsanded bamboo has a silica-rich outer layer that can be abrasive and fibrous edges at the nodes that will break skin. Look for canes that are sanded, sealed, and have smooth, finished node points. The tip should be capped or sealed to prevent splitting. Avoid canes that show any longitudinal cracking along the grain.

Garden centres, hardware stores, and craft suppliers all carry bamboo canes. A standard garden bamboo stake is the same thing. Check for splinters and sand any rough nodes before use.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT
Keep bamboo dry. It splits along the grain when it dries out too fast or absorbs moisture unevenly. A light coat of linseed or mineral oil helps maintain the cane. Inspect for splits before each use, particularly at the nodes and tip. A split bamboo cane should not be used on skin.
