Delrin Cane
A Delrin cane is made from Delrin, DuPont's trade name for acetal homopolymer, an engineering thermoplastic developed for industrial applications. It is rigid, smooth, moisture-resistant, and nearly indestructible under normal use. Delrin canes are typically machined to precise, consistent dimensions and are available in a range of diameters. They produce a sharp, intense, unforgiving sting with no flex to soften the impact.
WHY PEOPLE USE IT
Delrin is harder and denser than rattan and has none of the natural flex that allows rattan to absorb some of its own force. The result is one of the most intensely stingy implements available. It is also completely consistent: every stroke from a Delrin cane of a given diameter behaves identically. Some practitioners prefer this predictability. It is an advanced implement and not suitable for beginners or light scenes.
HISTORY
Delrin is a brand name for acetal homopolymer, an engineering thermoplastic developed by DuPont. The material was first synthesised in the early 1950s and brought to market commercially in 1960, designed for industrial applications requiring high strength, dimensional stability, and resistance to moisture and wear: gear components, bearings, fasteners. It was not designed for impact play.
Its properties that made it useful in manufacturing, rigidity without brittleness, smooth surface, imperviousness to moisture, resistance to splintering, also make it an effective cane material. At some point in the postwar BDSM community the material was adopted for cane-making, likely because it could be machined to precise dimensions and was available in rod stock. WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Diameter is the main variable: thinner Delrin (6mm and below) is extremely intense and should be used with significant experience. The finish should be smooth with a cleanly rounded tip. Unlike rattan, there are no natural variation points to check , uniformity is the standard. Buy from BDSM specialist makers who work to consistent specifications.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER IT
Delrin is almost maintenance-free. Wipe clean with any cleaner including alcohol. It will not warp, crack, or absorb moisture. Inspect the tip before use for any edge damage. Delrin canes last indefinitely with basic care.
