Flogging
Flogging is the practice of striking someone with a flogger, a multi-tailed implement with a handle and a fall of multiple tails. The tails spread on impact, covering a broad area simultaneously rather than concentrating force at a single point. This makes flogging one of the more controllable and scalable impact activities: intensity can be dialled from a barely-there sensation to significant pain by adjusting swing speed, material, and technique, without changing the implement.
Flogging sits within impact play and is most commonly practised in D/s and SM contexts, though it is also used as a standalone sensation practice without a power dynamic frame.
WHAT IT SEPARATES FROM
These comparisons group by implement, the specific tool used, not by the general action of striking someone, which any of these could describe.
Whipping: Whipping uses single-tail implements (bullwhip, signal whip, dragon tail) that concentrate force at the tip rather than spreading it across multiple tails. Whipping requires more skill to place safely and produces more intense, localised impact. Flogging is more forgiving of imprecise technique.
WHY PEOPLE LIKE IT
Flogging works on the receiver's internal state, not just their body. The dominant is steering attention, surrender, and headspace in real time, and the implement is how that happens. The full picture of why that dynamic works is on the Impact Play entry.
What the flogger specifically enables is sustained rhythm and a gradual build. Where sharper implements land with immediate intensity, a flogger accumulates: each stroke adds to the last, the sensation spreading across a wide area and deepening over time. This allows both the neurochemical response and the receiver's headspace to develop slowly, which makes flogging particularly effective for chasing subspace. The upper back, buttocks, and thighs each read differently and shift the receiver's headspace in distinct directions, giving the person delivering a range of choices within a single scene. Body mapping, working systematically across those zones with different materials over time, is a flogging-specific practice as much as a general dominant skill. For the person delivering, the rhythm and precision required tends to produce a flow state. At the lighter end, a soft flogger produces something closer to a massage than impact play, which makes it one of the few implements that can serve sensory scenes and heavy SM scenes equally.
PREVALENCE & GENDER
Population research on BDSM tracks broad categories, not individual implements, so there is no dataset that isolates flogging from other forms of impact play, or from other implements such as the strap, cane, or paddle.
I am running my own study to close this gap: which specific implements people actually use, how often, and why. Take the survey if you would like to contribute.
EXAMPLES OF ACTIVITIES
Trailing the tails across the skin or holding the flogger close without striking, to build anticipation. Stroking the struck areas with the hand between strikes. Dragging the tails softly across skin that has already been struck, for a cooling, calming sensation between sets. Punishment scenes with a fixed stroke count, the receiver counting each stroke aloud and thanking the dominant. Flogging as behavioural correction within an ongoing power dynamic, applied as consequence rather than scene. Heavy sustained flogging over the upper back and buttocks to build intensity toward subspace. Flogging combined with bondage, the receiver restrained throughout. Sensory flogging at low intensity as a warm-up before heavier implements. Body mapping: working systematically across zones and materials to build knowledge of a specific receiver's responses.

HISTORY
Flogging as formal punishment has ancient roots. The Roman flagellum and flagrum were multi-tailed implements used for judicial and military punishment, and the practice continued largely unchanged through European legal systems for the next two thousand years. By the eighteenth century it was the backbone of discipline in the British Royal Navy, and the ritual that grew around it was elaborate. Formal floggings were conducted on deck with the entire crew summoned to witness. The prisoner was brought forward by marines with fixed bayonets. The boatswain's mate combed out the tails of the cat between each stroke to prevent them matting together and reducing the force of the blow. Every element of the ceremony was designed to amplify the humiliation as much as the pain.
For serious offences, the punishment escalated to flogging around the fleet: the offender was rowed from ship to ship in the harbour, receiving strokes on the deck of each one, with a doctor present to assess whether the man could survive enough to continue. The total number of lashes could reach into the hundreds. It was widely understood to be a death sentence administered over several days. Flogging was suspended by the Board of Admiralty in 1881, though it remained on the books for mutiny until well into the twentieth century.
The erotic tradition developed in parallel. By the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, flagellation had become a distinct genre in European erotic literature and a commercial service in London brothels. Theresa Berkley ran the most celebrated of these establishments in Marylebone in the 1820s and 1830s, where she invented a padded whipping frame, later called the Berkley Horse, that restrained a client face-down while allowing simultaneous stimulation from below. When she died in 1836 her estate was valued at around £10,000, roughly £1.2 to £1.5 million today, the majority earned from flogging wealthy clients. Victorian England's underground press amplified the genre further: works like An Experimental Lecture by Colonel Spanker (1878) were sold openly on Holywell Street in London, detailing ritualized whipping scenes for a substantial readership that included, by most accounts, a significant portion of the aristocracy.
The erotic use of flogging entered the postwar leather community through these routes. By the 1970s, San Francisco leatherworkers were producing floggers purpose-built for sensation rather than punishment, refining tail materials and handle weight for consensual use. Flogging became one of the central skills taught in structured SM educational contexts through the 1980s and 1990s, with established technique vocabulary and a community of skilled practitioners who drew a clear line between the implement's history and what they were doing with it.
TIPS FOR ENGAGING WITH IT
Start with a soft material: suede or deerskin. These are forgiving of imprecise technique and produce minimal risk of unintended injury. Learn the figure-eight swing before trying other techniques: it produces a consistent, flowing impact and gives good control over where the tails land.
Aim for the meaty areas: the upper back, the buttocks, and the upper thighs. Warm up the skin before moving to heavier implements and build intensity gradually rather than opening at full force.
Establish no-go zones before the scene, including visible areas. Marks anywhere not covered by everyday clothing may not be acceptable to the receiver regardless of scene intensity.
In public play spaces, claim your space and establish the full arc of your swing before you drop into the scene. Ideally a dom should be able to be completely present with their submissive once a scene starts, not managing the room. In practice, public dungeons require enough background awareness to catch someone drifting into range. It is an unfortunate overhead of public play that observers should be helping to remove by staying clear.
IS IT SAFE
Flogging is one of the lower-risk impact activities when technique is sound and target zones are respected. The main risks are: striking injury zones (kidneys, spine, joints), wrap-around where tail tips travel further than intended and strike an unintended area, and underestimating intensity when the receiver is in subspace and no longer giving accurate feedback.
Wrap is the most common technique error. In an arc swing, the tips of the tails travel faster than the base and can wrap around the body to strike the front, sides, or face. Control swing arc to keep the tips within the intended target zone. This is especially important with heavier materials like rubber and chain.
Bruising and marking are expected outcomes of moderate to heavy flogging and are not in themselves a problem. Broken skin requires wound care and means implements used on that person should be quarantined or cleaned to appropriate standard before use on others.
